Staying safe on your bike

Stay safe while cycling by following a few simple tips below

General advice

  • Always wear a helmet
  • In wet weather watch your speed as surfaces may be slippery and it will take you longer to stop
  • If cycling at night or in bad weather, use lights
  • Don’t use headphones or mobiles while cycling

Cycling on roads

  • Ride decisively and a good distance from the kerb
  • Ride in a position where you can see and be seen by other road users
  • Let other road users know when you are going to turn by indicating
  • Look behind you before you turn, overtake or stop
  • When overtaking parked cars, watch out for car doors opening and allow room to pass safely
  • Obey traffic lights and road signs
  • Consider wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially in town or at night
  • Avoid undertaking any vehicle on the inside (especially when they are at a stand-still at junctions)
  • On busy or narrow roads, don’t cycle next to another person

Cycling on bridleways & shared paths

  • Give way to pedestrians and horse-riders
  • Slow down when passing pedestrians and horse-riders
  • Take extra care when passing dogs off their leash
  • Stay left when cyclists are passing the other way
  • Alert pedestrians to your presence by using your bell or shouting something polite
  • Do not use your bell when approaching horses.  To avoid startling them, use your voice to warn of your approach
  • Pass horses on the right and first check with the rider that it is safe to do so
  • If a horse is spooked by your presence, stop and wait for the rider to say it is safe to pass
